  1. A mound or ridge of wind-drifted sand. Loose
  2. sand is blown and bounced along by the wind,
  3. up the windward side of a dune. The sand
  4. particles then fall to rest on the lee side,
  5. while more are blown up from the windward
  6. side. In this way a dune moves gradually
  7. downwind. Dunes are features of sandy deserts
  8. and beach fronts. The typical crescent-shaped
  9. dune is called a barchan. Seif dunes are
  10. longitudinal and lie parallel to the wind
  11. direction, and star-shaped dunes are formed
  12. by irregular winds.
